Hunting / Waterfowl

Best duck decoys.
Build the right spread.

Six picks for the way you hunt. Start with floaters, then add motion if your water calls for it.

Research-based recommendations, not Timberwake field tests. This guide focuses on floating mallard spreads. Links currently go to ordinary product pages; we do not earn commissions from them.

GHG Pro-Grade XD Harvester duck decoys
Best overall

GHG Pro-Grade XD Harvester

Everyday floating spread · 6-pack

Our starting point for a realistic, mixed-posture mallard spread.

  • Supple bodies with detailed feather carving.
  • Weighted keels and varied feeding, resting, and active poses.

The trade-off: Premium pricing; protect the finish with a slotted bag.

View product & current price
Why we picked it

Banded lists four drakes and two hens in the current Harvester six-pack. Outdoor Life’s published field experience supports the XD series as a durable everyday choice when stored in slotted bags. Pack contents have changed over time: compare the actual listing rather than assuming an older review shows today’s assortment.

Manufacturer specifications

Higdon Standard Mallard duck decoys
Best budget

Higdon Standard Mallard

Small-water starter · Regular 6-pack

An affordable foundation for a pond or marsh spread.

  • Simple mix of four drakes and two hens.
  • Smaller bodies keep the spread manageable to carry.

The trade-off: Less visible at a distance than oversized floaters.

View product & current price
Why we picked it

The Regular six-pack was listed at $64.99 when checked; the foam-filled version was $69.99. That small difference makes foam filling worth considering if durability matters more than minimum cost. This pick is based on current specifications and value, not our own season-long testing. Budget for anchors, line, and a bag as well.

Manufacturer specifications

HEYDAY HydroFoam Mallards duck decoys
Best for walk-in hunts

HEYDAY HydroFoam Mallards

Carry-in spreads · 6-pack

Our pick when quiet handling and carrying comfort matter.

  • Hollow foam construction avoids a sealed plastic air chamber.
  • Removable keel weights let you tailor the setup.

The trade-off: A premium price, and rigging still adds significant weight.

View product & current price
Why we picked it

HEYDAY lists 10.875 pounds per dozen without keel weights and 15.625 pounds with them installed, before your anchor rig. It is our walk-in choice for its foam design and quiet handling, not a claim that it is the lightest decoy at every size. Outdoor Life also selected HydroFoam for lightweight use. The six-pack contains four drakes and two hens.

Manufacturer specifications

Avian-X Topflight Oversized Mallards duck decoys
Best for open water

Avian-X Topflight Oversized Mallards

Boat-based spreads · 6-pack

For hunters who favor a larger profile and a broad, stable body.

  • Wide bodies and contrasting paint for visibility.
  • Weight-forward keels designed to help decoys self-right.

The trade-off: Bulkier and more expensive than a small-water starter spread.

Why we picked it

The manufacturer lists a 17-inch chest-to-tail length and a six-pack of four drakes and two hens. This recommendation is for SKU AVX-AVX8095. Avian-X also sells an Open Water Pack under a different SKU; check the model before comparing prices or reviews. Our choice here is based on the oversized model’s construction and intended use.

Manufacturer specifications

Higdon Battleship Mallards duck decoys
Best foam-filled boat spread

Higdon Battleship Mallards

Large floaters · 6-pack

For a substantial, foam-filled spread when the boat does the carrying.

  • Foam-filled bodies with adjustable head positions.
  • Large profiles and weighted keels.

The trade-off: Heavy and bulky; some owner reviews report head-fit problems.

View product & current price
Why we picked it

Higdon lists individual decoys at roughly 28–41 ounces, depending on the pose. The six-pack combines four drakes and two hens, with painted-head and flocked-head options. We would inspect removable heads on arrival. Foam filling supports flotation after damage; it does not make the paint or fittings immune to wear. This is a construction-led pick, not an independently verified durability winner.

Manufacturer specifications

Higdon Pulsator PRO Mallard duck decoys
Best water-motion add-on

Higdon Pulsator PRO Mallard

Powered motion · Add to existing floaters

For adding feeding movement to a spread that needs life on calm water.

  • Built-in timer controls the feeding motion.
  • Foam-filled body; drake and hen options.

The trade-off: Battery charging and maintenance add work to every trip.

View product & current price
Why we picked it

Higdon advertises seven hours of runtime; that is a manufacturer claim, not a Timberwake measurement. Owner feedback includes shorter battery life, so leave a margin for conditions and battery age. We recommend the current PRO, not the older XS. If buying used XS equipment, check Higdon’s published battery recall before use. This complements a floating spread rather than replacing it.

Manufacturer specifications

Start with the hunt.

Walking in or hunting small water?

Our starting point would be a manageable set of floaters, with line and anchors matched to the depth and bottom. Carry the full rig before buying more. A dozen decoys you can comfortably retrieve is more useful than a big spread you dread hauling.

Hunting from a boat?

Storage space gives you room for larger decoys. Choose between the Avian-X’s wide body and the Higdon’s foam-filled construction, then check how the rigged spread fits in your boat and bags.

Do you need a motion decoy?

Build your base spread first. Add a Pulsator if water movement is the missing piece; a manual jerk rig is another option. Powered-decoy rules vary by location and season, so check the rules for the exact area you hunt before using one.

Other brands we considered.

Dakota Decoy X-Treme Packable Mallards

A carry-in alternative worth comparing with HEYDAY. We want stronger independent evidence on this exact model before awarding it a category.

Flambeau Storm Front 2 Classic Mallards

Another budget option. Compare the actual six-pack or twelve-pack cost with rigging included; a bigger box is not automatically a better deal.

Cabela’s Northern Flight Oversized Mallards

Outdoor Life’s value pick is worth checking if you prefer Cabela’s. Confirm current stock and pack contents; older published prices may no longer apply.

MOJO spinning-wing decoys

Worth a separate look if you specifically want wing flash. A spinner solves a different problem from water movement and is not essential to every spread.

How we chose these decoys

We compared current manufacturer listings, construction, intended use, pack contents, published field reviews, and owner feedback. Category picks reflect our editorial judgment; we did not conduct hands-on tests or measure hunting success. Small review samples and brand-hosted ratings are supporting context, not proof that one decoy is best. We do not rank products by affiliate availability.

Prices and contents can change. Compare the exact model, quantity, rigging, battery, and bag included. Product images show manufacturer examples; the selected variant may differ.
